A businessman by nature, Raymond Wan earned a degree in business and has led a successful career in finance and sales while formulating the business plan and concept for the Wan Fiore Project. A long-time wine enthusiast, Raymond joined the world of winemaking in the winter of 2009 while interning at Clos Pepe Vineyard and learning hands-on vineyard management skills. Impressed with what he saw, he conceived the idea for making high-quality Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills appellation as the Wan Fiore Project which began with the harvest of 2009. Raymond’s association with Clos Pepe allowed WFP to make a Clos Pepe Vineyard Pinot Noir in both 2009 and 2010.
An earth scientist by education and training, Robert enjoys the melding of geology, chemistry, biology, and meteorology that form the exciting world of winemaking. What started in 2003 with UC Davis winemaking Extension classes and short courses culminated in 2013 with being admitted to the UC Davis M.S. program in Viticulture and Enology and a successful graduation in June of 2015.
During the journey, Robert gained hands-on harvest experience in Napa Valley at Spring Mountain Vineyard in 2008 and 2010 and Buccella in 2009. While at UC Davis, he was selected for the prestigious Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Fellowship for Fall 2014 and interned at Domaine Michel Lafarge in Volnay, Côte d’Or, Burgundy where he learned traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques from masters Michel and Frédéric Lafarge who shared a combined 100 harvests of winemaking expertise. In 2015 he continued his winemaking training with an internship at Arietta in Napa Valley learning from winemakers Andy Erickson and Morgan Maureze.
